Roofing is one of those decisions that gets made surprisingly quickly in the selections process — but it affects how your home looks, sounds, performs, and holds up for decades. Here’s how the three most common options in South East Queensland actually compare.
Standard Profile Tile
The traditional choice — proven, textured, and suited to classic and transitional home designs.
Flat Profile Tile
A sleeker, contemporary take on tile. Same material performance, more streamlined look.
Colourbond
Pre-painted steel in continuous sheets — the most versatile roof form, widest colour range.
Noise: what actually determines it
This is the question we get asked most often, and the honest answer is: it depends almost entirely on what’s underneath the roofing material, not just the material itself. Tile has natural mass, which absorbs sound by default. Colorbond, being a thin steel sheet, transmits sound more readily on its own. however with the right insulation underneath, the gap narrows significantly. More on that below.
Dealing with water
All three options shed water effectively when installed correctly, but they behave differently. Tile relies on overlapping rows and a steeper minimum pitch, valleys and penetrations need careful detailing, since these are the most common source of leaks over time. Colorbond runs in continuous sheets with far fewer joins, and sheds water quickly, providing a cleaner catchment surface for collecting rainwater.
Durability at a glance
- Tile: individual tiles crack and are simple to replace one at a time — no need to touch the rest of the roof.
- Colorbond: won’t crack, but a significant dent (hail, falling debris) isn’t a quick fix the way a cracked tile is.
- Both: genuinely long-lived when installed and maintained correctly — the right choice for your home comes down to design and priorities, not one being objectively “better built” than the other.
Making the call
There’s no universally “correct” answer between the three. The right choice depends on your home’s design, your property exposure (coastal versus inland), your budget, and your own priorities around noise, maintenance, and aesthetics. What matters is going into the decision with the full picture, including what’s happening under the roof covering, not just on top of it.
